Freddy, at the time of the Founding the militaries of the day carried rifles and muskets.  Our Founding Fathers did not turn around and tell the citizenry that they could only carry crossbows and spears because they did not wish for them to be as well-armed as the military.  On the contrary, our Founding Fathers knew that in order for the American people to remain free they must be as well armed and well equipped as the military.

Had the Founding Fathers had access to machine guns and automatic rifles they would want the citizenry to be equipped with them, so as to act as both support for the military in the event of external invasion and to act as the final check against tyranny from within.

There is a reason why the dictatorships of the 20th century disarmed the populace before showing their true colors.  The Nazis in Germany and the Communists in Russia and China never would have survived if they had faced armed opposition.  But, once their respective peoples were disarmed they subjugated them, segregated them, and murdered them.

I pray such a time does not come to this country, Freddy, but if it does I pray there is a patriot near you who can protect you with his Bushmaster.  Because you will need someone to protect you if you won't do it yourself.

Good Morning Uncle Henry,

About Obama’s 23 Executive Actions.  No’s 16, 17, and 20 through 23 reference mental health and the Affordable Care Act.  These actions concern me.  The media is touting that Obama has closed a loophole at gun shows. Whether he has or hasn’t I can’t say as I’m not familiar with the process of purchasing a firearm at a gun show.  However, while he may have closed that loophole, I feel he has created a larger one, leaving a huge grey area for more restrictions under the No’s I cited.  Here’s my concern.  What EXACTLY defines mental instability?  For instance, a person that had to take an anti depressant (or ssri) for a non threatening life issue VS a severe case of paranoid schizophrenia.  This is a very wide range Obama is leaving Secretary Sebelius to work with.  I know people taking anti-depressants that would never take another life unless it was a self defense situation.  This should concern folks. 

In 2007, after the VA Tech shooting, Congress passed a law that would prevent guns finding their way into the hands of the mentally ill. The LA Times reported:

"The measure, signed by President George W. Bush, promised to strengthen the 14-year-old National Instant Criminal Background Check System by establishing incentives and penalties to prod states to submit records of people legally barred under federal law from buying guns — including those who had been committed to mental institutions.

But today, that promise remains unfulfilled. More than half the states haven't provided mental health records to the federal database that gun dealers use to check on buyers. And the gap in dealing with the mentally ill is just one of myriad problems that have hampered background checks."

It’s just something to think about Uncle Henry. Obama knows he can’t eradicate the Second Amendment so he’ll go through the ACA for gun control.  I don’t see how any of these Executive Actions will prevent criminals or the mentally ill from committing horrific crimes as we’ve seen in the past.  Yet law abiding citizens continue to pay for those crimes.
